A barge for the people of Pomio District in East New Britain Province will soon arrive in the province from the Philippines.
The long-awaited MV Pomio barge was left stranded for months following the COVID 19 Pandemic restrictions.
The Pomio District Development Authority Board had purchased the vessel in South Korea and transported it to Cebu in the Philippines for modifications to be done.
The Pomio DDA Board also recently endorsed around K200,000 insurance cover for the vessel.
According to Pomio DDA CEO Peter Peniat, there were additional fees paid by the DDA, because the vessel was purchased during the COVID 19 pandemic, resulting in the total figure exceeding K5million, which is exclusive of the insurance fee.
Pomio MP Elias Kapavore said they plan to commission the vessel at Palmalmal on the 14th of November this year and will start its operations under Coastal Shipping, in consultation with the district business arm – the Pomio Development Corporation.
The vessel can carry up to 194 passengers as well as cars, cargoes, and fuel.
MV Pomio will service the Rabaul port to coastal Pomio district right through to Kandrian Gloucester coast in West New Britain province and to Lae in Morobe province.
