Your information, explained

NBC respects your privacy. This policy describes the current App, separates planned features from active services, and explains how to ask us about your information.

About this policy

The National Broadcasting Corporation of Papua New Guinea (“NBC”, “we”, “our” or “us”) operates the NBC PNG mobile application (the “App”), Android package com.nbc.png. This policy explains how information is handled when you use the App and how to contact NBC about your privacy.

The App provides access to NBC radio, television where available, news and public information, including an Election 2027 information section. Service availability depends on the content and streams NBC makes available.

You do not need to create an account or supply a name, email address, telephone number or personal profile to use the App’s current core broadcasting functions. SkelHost provides technical development and support for the App on NBC’s behalf; NBC is the contact for privacy enquiries.

This policy covers the mobile App. Other websites, external applications and services you choose to open may have their own privacy notices.

Information processed by the App

Connections to radio, television, news and images

When the App requests a stream, article, image or other online resource, NBC’s servers or the hosting and content-delivery providers serving that resource receive the connection information needed to respond. This includes your IP address and the requested resource. Depending on the service, request times, response or error information, and technical application, device or operating-system information may also be received or recorded.

This information is used to deliver content, operate the service and investigate faults or misuse. An IP address can indicate an approximate geographic area; this is different from accessing your device’s precise GPS location.

Information held on your device

The App holds playback state and recently loaded content in memory while it runs. Android and media or image components may also keep temporary files or caches to display content and operate efficiently. This is not a personal NBC account or a cloud-synchronised listening profile.

Information you choose to send to NBC

If you email or telephone NBC, we receive the contact information and message or other details you choose to provide through that channel. A support enquiry may include your App version, device model and a description or screenshot of the problem. Please do not send passwords, private signing keys, financial information or unrelated personal information.

Information not requested for core broadcasting

The current App does not require access to your address book, SMS messages, call history, camera, microphone or precise device location to deliver its broadcasting features. Choosing a station or province is a content choice, not a request for your home address or location.

How information is used

NBC uses information associated with the App to deliver the content you request, maintain playback and content availability, provide technical support, investigate errors and protect the service against misuse.

Information you send directly to NBC is used to respond to your enquiry, resolve the issue and maintain an appropriate record of the response. Information may also be handled where necessary to meet applicable legal obligations.

NBC does not sell personal information collected through the App. The current App does not contain an advertising-profiling SDK. Advertising that may form part of a broadcast is distinct from profiling a user through the App.

Analytics, notifications and crash reporting

Current service status

Firebase services are not active in the App version covered by this policy. As at 10 September 2026, the App does not include Google Analytics for Firebase, Firebase Cloud Messaging or Firebase Crashlytics. It does not send App analytics, messaging registration tokens or crash reports through those services.

NBC plans to introduce these services in a later update. The following describes their intended purposes, not current collection:

Google Analytics for Firebase
To measure use of App features, such as station selection, playback and article opening. When enabled, the service can process App-instance identifiers, device and App information, usage events and approximate location information.
Firebase Cloud Messaging
To deliver NBC news, public-information and service notifications. When enabled, it can process an installation identifier, a notification registration token and technical delivery information. Android notification permission controls the display of notifications; it does not by itself control all SDK data processing.
Firebase Crashlytics
To diagnose crashes and selected technical failures. When enabled, it can process installation or session identifiers, App and device information, stack traces and controlled diagnostic information.

Before activating these services, NBC will update this policy to describe the implemented collection, retention and user controls, and provide any required in-App notice or consent choice. This policy is not itself consent to future collection.

The intended implementation will not deliberately attach names, email addresses, telephone numbers, precise addresses, free-form personal text, notification tokens or complete stream URLs to Analytics events or developer-supplied crash diagnostics.

More information is available in Google’s Privacy Policy and Firebase’s privacy information.

Service providers and information sharing

Providing online broadcasting involves more than the App itself. NBC uses infrastructure and technical providers to host content, deliver media and images, maintain services and provide support. The television service currently uses Castr-hosted streaming infrastructure. Providers delivering a requested resource can receive the connection information described in Section 2.

Technical support providers, including SkelHost when assisting NBC, may handle information necessary to investigate a problem or carry out authorised support. Information is to be used for those service purposes, not for the provider’s independent advertising or sale.

NBC may disclose information where reasonably necessary to comply with a lawful request or applicable law, protect the service or the rights and safety of others, or carry out an action you request.

Processing outside Papua New Guinea. Hosting, content-delivery and support services may process information in other countries. The country in which you use the App, or an Analytics account’s selected country, does not mean all information is stored in that country. NBC requires appropriate handling of information by providers acting on its behalf.

Permissions and playback controls

The App needs an internet connection to retrieve online content. Radio playback can continue in the background after you start it. Playback controls and Android media notifications help you pause, resume or stop it.

The current playback notification is separate from the planned Firebase push-notification service. Notification availability and controls depend on your Android version and device settings. Turning off visible notifications does not necessarily stop active audio; use the player or available media controls to stop playback.

The App’s telephone, email and website actions open your dialler, email application or browser. The App does not place a call or send an email automatically. You decide whether to complete the action.

When push notifications are introduced, you will be able to manage their display through Android notification settings. Any additional App controls and collection choices will be described when that feature is made available.

Data retention and deletion

NBC retains information it holds only for as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy, including resolving enquiries, operating and protecting services, and meeting applicable legal obligations. When information is no longer needed, it is deleted or de-identified where appropriate.

Technical connection logs are retained according to the operational and security requirements of the systems that deliver the content. Different hosting or delivery services may have different retention schedules; this policy does not represent that every provider keeps logs for the same fixed period.

Support correspondence may be retained to resolve your enquiry, maintain a record of the response and address follow-up issues. Information may need to be retained longer for a legal requirement, a dispute or an active security investigation.

You can clear the App’s locally stored data or uninstall it through Android settings. This does not automatically delete correspondence already sent to NBC or logs already held by NBC or its service providers. Device backups, where used, are managed through your device or backup-provider settings.

There is no NBC App account to delete. You can still request access, correction or deletion of personal information NBC holds in connection with the App by following Section 10.

Keeping information secure

NBC is responsible for taking reasonable administrative and technical measures to protect information associated with the App. This includes limiting access to authorised service purposes and requiring secure handling by personnel and providers working on NBC’s behalf.

No device, network or internet service can guarantee absolute security. Keep your device and App updated, use a trusted source for App installations, and avoid including unnecessary personal information in support requests. Contact NBC if you believe information associated with the App has been misused.

Children and family use

The App is a general public-broadcasting service. It does not provide a child profile, account-registration form or a feature asking children to submit personal information. This does not mean that ordinary technical connection information is never processed when a child accesses online content.

Parents and guardians should help children use online services appropriately. If you believe a child has sent personal information to NBC that should be removed, please contact us so that we can assess the request and take appropriate action.

Your choices and privacy requests

You can stop playback, close the App, manage available Android permissions and notifications, clear local App data or uninstall the App. Opening an external dialler, email application or website is optional.

To ask about your information, request access or correction, request deletion, or raise a privacy concern, email info@nbc.com.pg with the subject “NBC PNG App Privacy Request”. You can also telephone +675 325 5233.

Tell us what you are requesting and give enough context to locate the information, such as the date of an earlier support enquiry. Do not include passwords, identification documents or other sensitive material unless NBC later requests what is necessary through an appropriate channel.

NBC may need to verify your connection to the information before responding. Requests will be assessed under applicable law and the circumstances of the information held. If information cannot be located or must be retained for a lawful reason, NBC will explain the relevant limitation. Because the App has no user account, NBC may be unable to link a particular technical log entry to you.

External links and this privacy page

When you open a link in a browser or another application, that service’s own privacy practices apply. NBC’s App policy does not replace the policies of your email provider, device platform, Google Play, or other independently operated services.

This standalone privacy page contains no analytics tags, advertising scripts, embedded media or forms that collect information. It does not set its own tracking cookies or use browser storage to profile visitors. The web host or security infrastructure serving the page can still receive ordinary connection information and maintain operational logs.

Other NBC website pages may include different services or technologies. This statement about the privacy page is not a claim that the entire NBC website is free of cookies or third-party processing.

Policy updates and contacting NBC

NBC will keep this policy available at nbc.com.pg/privacy. When App data practices change, we will update the policy and its effective date. Where appropriate or required, we will also provide notice in the App and obtain any necessary consent before the change takes effect.
